Top Hat Tobacco Friday Happy Hour by Mark Megl

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

There are very few things in life that are as pleasurable and relaxing as spending time with good friends, smoking fine cigars and enjoying frosty beverages. I bring this up because it has been weeks (4) since I have been able to enjoy one of the finer times in my life which is the “Happy Hour” on Friday afternoons/evenings at Top Hat Tobacco.

The evening usually starts around 4:30 when I drop off some of Einstein Bros. tastier sandwich nosh box, an ice cold blended coffee drink for Danelle (love her), grab a nice tasty cigar from the walk-in humidor and an icy cold frosty beverage. I stop in at Arch Memory to say hi to the gang, shake hands with the owners, Mark and Eric and my friend Chad. Then I sit down and relax in the lounge, feeling all the stress leaving my body as I light up, usually a Macanudo or Ashton. Speaking of Macanudos, Top Hat has the most incredible bargain ever on a 4 pack of Hampton Courts. For just under $18.00 you can enjoy Robust, Maduro, Cafe or my favorite, Gold Label. The set does make a nice gift too.

Usually during this time I see a lot of familiar faces such as Mark L. and Mike. It is so enjoyable to chat and discuss current topics, sports or just life in general with everyone including Eric and Chad as they join everyone in the lounge when they get off work.

Tophat is always bustling on Friday evenings, the sandwiches are almost always devoured quickly and the setting is just absolutely perfect if you need a place to unwind, smoke a nice cigar and spend time with good quality people.

My humidor’s humidifier thingy got fuzzy, what should I do?

Friday, October 19th, 2007

So I checked my humidor a couple weeks ago, and the humidifier inside was fuzzy- it had some mold or something growing on it that was white and fuzzy! This of course was quite concerning, since I didn’t want the cigars, of which I had quite a few nice ones in there, to get messed up.

So being the frugal person I am, I figured I would try to clean up the humidifier and see if I could re-use it. So I took it apart, cleaned the plastic case with bleach, and tried scraping off the fuzzy stuff as best I could from the green block inside. Needless to say, this didn’t actually work. I went out of town a couple weeks, and when I got back, the humidifier was fuzzy again, maybe even worse than the first time. So I pulled the humidifier out of the humidor.

First step- check my local shop for a new humidifier. Even at a store with great prices like Top Hat Tobacco, a replacement was around $30. Ouch. So I think “Why not replace the green stuff inside the humidifier with some new green stuff? It looks just like the stuff you get from a craft store for sticking flowers into.”

So here I am at work, cutting out a new block of green humidor foam. I will let you know how it worked in a week or two. If any of you out there need some, I have plenty to spare- just stop by the shop and cut a piece off for yourself. Humidor Foam
