Ashton Virgin Sun Grown (VSG) Review

Fire in the fire pit

A couple years ago my wife got me a copper firepit for having a fire outside on the porch. One of the best birthday presents ever! So above you can see it in use, while below you see me, by the light of the fire, sampling an Ashton VSG.

Eric enjoying an Ashton VSG

When the Ashton Virgin Sun Grown (VSG) line was released in 1999, it was instantly called a success. Cigar Insider even went so far as to say that “connoisseurs are seeking out the Ashton Virgin Sun Grown with a fervor not seen in the industry for years…”

This particular 5 1/2 inch by 50 ring gauge robusto puts the Ashton VSG’s rich flavors in a classic size. The cigar has a rustic, deep brown wrapper and a slight box press. The press – which isn’t as extreme as a Padrón 1926 (a cigar that the Ashton VSG is often compared to) – lets the cigar sit comfortably in your hand.

Prior to being lit, the cigar had rich roasted mocha notes with a fantastic aroma of vanilla flavors. The band’s classic white, black, and gold with a crown give it an almost royal appearance.

Fortunately, when lit, the flavors remained just as impressive. Almost immediately rich earth and mocha flavors were apparent. Over time that was complimented by deep roasted notes.

Overall, the Ashton VSG offers dark, luscious flavors without sacrificing its smooth balance, everything you would expect from a cigar developed for Ashton by Carlos Fuente.

The construction was also notable with a medium draw. And while initially the burn was a bit temperamental, it quickly evened out until it was straight by the midway point.

Earlier in the review I mentioned that the Ashton VSG line was often compared to the Padron Anniversary line. I must say that the comparison has merit, as both cigars are known for pairing full flavor with smoothness in a way that is uncommon, even for the best handmade cigars in the $8 and up price range.

This cigar is currently available at Top Hat Tobacco for $9.90 each, worth every penny.

CAO Party at TopHat Tobacco, November 7, 2007

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

We had a fine party Thursday night, with around 50 folks attending. Heading up the party was Strom from CAO, who gave away a free CAO cigar for every 3 purchased. We gave away around $350 worth of goodies and gift certificates, so the chances of winning were pretty good! The grand prize was a full-size golf bag with a built-in humidor. Scott, pictured here, won the bag- good job!11-08-07_scott.jpg

We also gave away a box of CAO Brazilia Anacondas, big bad boys when you’ve got some extra time to smoke. They are almost 9 inches long! Take a look on the Top Hat website for our full selection of CAO Cigars.

We also had some great chicken chili and bagel sandwiches provided by Einstein’s Bagels (who else???).

Take a look at some of the pictures- they aren’t that great because I used my cell phone to take them!

Oregon voters defeat proposed smoker’s tax increase- GOOD JOB!

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

I understand that voters in Oregon defeated a proposed tax increase yesterday, by a wide margin of 60% against the increase, 40% for it. I say GOOD JOB!

There are so many arguments for increasing smoker’s taxes, we’ve all heard them:
- The higher taxes will dramatically reduce youth smoking
- Less smoking will lead to lower tobacco-related health care costs
- The monies collected will be used to pay for kid’s health care programs
- Thousands of lives will be saved
- Etc. Etc. Etc.

This is so much bull it’s hard to know where to start- in my book it all boils down to someone wanting to raise my taxes to fund whatever pet government program they are pushing that week.

Think about it this way- every time you vote “Yes” for a tax increase, YOU will have to pay more taxes somewhere. So if you raise your taxes say, $100 per year, that is $100 you HAVE to give to some governmental agency like the IRS. What happens if you do not pay your taxes? If it’s bad enough, you will go to JAIL. At its core, that’s why we all submit to the government every single April 15 and pay up.

So you have to go to work another day this year and every year after that (assuming you make $100/day) just to pay that tax increase. IF you didn’t have to pay that extra $100, then you could have taken another day off to goof around, or used the money to buy something you want (like a nice box of cigars), which would stimulate the economy and yes, cause more taxes to be paid by the merchant you bought something from, the staff he is paying to work the store, etc. etc. — It’s all a good thing when you have lower taxes!

I probably shouldn’t say it but this belief is the reason I vote against virtually every tax increase I see. Yes, I even voted against the increased property tax to fund our local library yesterday!  (It passed anyway.)

I guess I haven’t even addressed the health issues raised by smoking (a bunch of balony, especially with cigars), but it is already getting hard enough to find somewhere to smoke and the prices have been getting driven up so much through increased taxes, that it seems like the poor persecuted smokers are going to all disappear soon! But we at Top Hat Tobacco are helping combat that problem with our nice smoking lounge which all are invited to use for free! Come on by and enjoy a nice, fat, cigar. While you are here, enjoy the Wi-Fi or the big screen TV. By the way, we have a Cigar Happy Hour every Friday, and a special manufacturer’s party by CAO tomorrow which I’ll write another blog entry about shortly.

Have a great day, and smoke one for me!
